A 25-year-old woman, from Mali in Africa, who was expecting seven babies gave birth to nine on Tuesday. All the nine babies are “doing well”.

The Malian government flew the woman named Halima Cisse from the West African country to Morocco in North Africa for better care on March 30. Cisse was believed to have been carrying septuplets.

Cases of women successfully giving birth to septuplets are rare and those giving birth to nonuplets are rarer.

In a statement, Mali’s health ministry said that Cisse gave birth to five girls and four boys by Caesarean section.

“The mother and babies are doing well so far,” Mali’s Health Minister Fanta Siby told AFP. The Malian doctor who accompanied Cisse to Morocco has been keeping the ministry informed about the mother and her newborns.

Siby added that the mother and her nonuplets will be returning home in several weeks’ time.

Doctors had been worried about the mother’s health and the chances of survival of her babies, local media reports said.

Mali’s health ministry said that the reports of Cisse’s ultrasounds done in both Mali and Morocco had suggested that she was carrying seven babies.

Siby congratulated “the medical teams of Mali and Morocco, whose professionalism is at the origin of the happy outcome of this pregnancy”.

Last month, a woman from Australia shared how she gave birth to twins despite finding out she was pregnant the week before. When she went for a medical checkup, the doctor told her that she was six months pregnant. The news was a complete shock for her as her body hadn’t changed dramatically. A week and a half later, she went into labour and gave birth to twins.
